Protrade International identifies energy savings opportunities in lighting systems on the basis of the lighting requirements and occupancy rates of individual spaces vis-à-vis its current use of
bulbs, fixtures and controls. The benefits of converting from incandescent to compact fluorescent lighting are well known, for example, and the technical and price improvements of LED (light-
emitting diode) systems can often take the energy savings one step further. Fixtures such as T5 or T8 fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts offer other ways to stem operating costs. Many
facilities, large and small, can also benefit from a variety of lighting controls which serve to set back or turn off lighting. To accomplish this, Protrade considers communicating panelboards, bi-
level switching, dimmers, occupancy sensors and daylight sensors (photocells), among others. .
